Hello, Lykkers! Are you craving a coastal escape that blends ocean views, cultural charm, and relaxed sophistication? Let's discover Biarritz together—a gem on France's southwest coast that feels like a dream.
From its golden beaches to its chic cafes, we'll find everything we need for a perfect getaway. Whether we're looking to surf, relax, or explore the Basque culture, Biarritz has it all.
Biarritz sits in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France, just 25 km from the Spanish border. It faces the Bay of Biscay and is part of the Basque Country.
How to get there:
- By plane: Biarritz Pays Basque Airport (BIQ) is only 3 km from the city center. Flights are available from Paris, London, Geneva, and other European cities.
- By train: We can take the TGV (high-speed train) to Biarritz from Paris in about 4.5 hours. The nearest major train station is Gare de Biarritz.
- By bus: Long-distance buses from companies like FlixBus and BlaBlaCar stop in Biarritz.
- Local transport: Buses and electric shuttles run across the town, and the city is very walkable.
Biarritz isn't just about the beach—it's packed with things to see and do.
La Grande Plage: The town's most famous beach, perfect for sunbathing and people-watching. Free access.
Biarritz Lighthouse (Phare de Biarritz): For panoramic views over the town and sea.
- Open daily 10:00–13:00 & 14:00–18:00 (April–October)
- Ticket: $3 per adult
Aquarium de Biarritz: Home to sharks, sea turtles, and a rooftop view.
- Open daily 9:30–19:00 (summer), 9:30–18:00 (off-season)
- Adult: $16 | Child (ages 4–12): $12
Rocher de la Statue (Rock of the Statue): A scenic cliff-top viewpoint connected by a bridge. Free and open 24/7.
Cité de l’Océan: An interactive ocean-themed science museum.
- Open 10:00–19:00 (summer), limited hours in low season
- Adult: $15 | Child: $11
We recommend visiting between May and September when the weather is warm and the sea is inviting. July and August are the liveliest months, perfect for festivals and beach fun—but also the busiest. If we prefer fewer crowds, June and early September offer a great balance of sunshine and calm.
- Luxury: Hôtel du Palais – A historic palace-turned-luxury hotel, once a favorite of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.
Rates start from $450/night.
- Mid-range: Mercure Président Biarritz Plage – Modern comfort near the beach.
Around $150–200/night.
- Budget: Hotel de la Plage – Cozy rooms and a great location.
Rates from $90/night.
Biarritz offers a blend of French and Basque flavors. We should try:
- Basque cake (Gâteau Basque): A sweet almond pastry.
- Fresh seafood: Especially anchovies, squid, and sardines.
Recommended spots:
- Les Halles Market: Great for local cheeses, pastries, and snacks.
- Milwaukee Café: Perfect for brunch and coffee.
- Chez Albert: Excellent seafood near the port.
1. Language: French is the main language, but some locals speak Basque. English is spoken in tourist areas.
2. Currency: Euro (€). Credit cards widely accepted.
3. Safety: Biarritz is very safe, but as always, keep an eye on your belongings at the beach.
4. Clothing: Pack swimsuits, sunglasses, light clothing, and a light jacket for breezy evenings.
So Lykkers, what do you think? Biarritz isn't just another beach town—it's a full experience. With its surf culture, historical charm, and breathtaking coast, we'll feel both relaxed and inspired. Whether we're sipping espresso near the sea or hiking up to the lighthouse, every moment here feels special.
