Where Is Kefalonia, Greece?
Kefalonia (also known as Cephalonia) is the largest island in the Ionian Sea and one of the biggest islands in Greece. Located in the heart of the Ionian, it lies off the coast of the Peloponnese and Western Greece. Much like the rest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia is famous for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, lush vegetation, and dramatic mountainous landscapes.
Best Time to Visit Kefalonia
Kefalonia enjoys a pleasant climate with warm temperatures year-round, although the island experiences a fair amount of rainfall for much of the year. The best time to visit is during the summer months, when you can expect plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures around 30°C. While June to September is the peak tourist season in Greece, Kefalonia remains relatively uncrowded due to its large size, so you can enjoy the beauty of the island even during high season.
How Many Days Should You Spend in Kefalonia?
Kefalonia is a large island, so unlike the compact Cyclades Islands, it takes more time to explore. If you’re used to visiting smaller Greek islands, you may find the distances on Kefalonia a bit longer, which means more time spent driving. We recommend staying at least one week to experience the top attractions and still have some leisure time. If you have less time, it’s a good idea to focus on one specific area of the island instead of trying to see everything in a short time.
How to Get to Kefalonia
By Plane:
The quickest way to reach Kefalonia is by plane. During the summer, many direct flights are available from major European cities to Kefalonia’s International Airport, just 15 minutes from Argostoli. If a direct flight isn’t available, you can fly to Athens and then continue to Kefalonia by car or bus.
By Car & Ferry from Athens:
If you're flying into Athens, you can rent a car at the airport and drive to Kyllini Port in the Peloponnese, where ferries to Kefalonia depart. The drive takes about three and a half hours, and the ferry ride from Kyllini to Poros Port on Kefalonia lasts about 90 minutes.
By Ferry:
While Kefalonia no longer has a direct ferry connection to Piraeus (Athens' main port), you can take a ferry from the Greek mainland ports of Kyllini or Patras in the Peloponnese or from other Ionian Islands like Zakynthos (Zante).
