When traveling with children, one of the most important decisions is where to stay. The accommodation should cater to their need for freedom, play, and fun.
While many associate camping with those traveling in RVs, caravans, or tents, it turns out that camping is an excellent option for families, even without those preconceived ideas.
A recent trip proved that, yes, travel can be expensive, but with careful planning, it is possible to enjoy a low-cost weekend getaway, full of experiences and laughter.
This time, instead of booking a hotel or a B&B, a cozy chalet was chosen, nestled within a nature reserve just a few kilometers from Siena and Arezzo. Although only 20 square meters, the chalet was well-equipped and perfect for a family escape.
Hotels are often the most convenient in terms of location, but in places like Florence, the prices are exorbitant. Additionally, there are always additional fees for services like breakfast or local taxes, which can add up quickly. Finding a centrally located hotel with free parking is also challenging.
B&Bs can be a great option, but it’s often difficult to find one with availability for a group of 4 adults and 3 children for a single night, as many B&B owners prefer longer stays. An apartment rental might seem like a good choice, but sometimes the required security deposit is unreasonably high, making short stays less economical.
Furthermore, staying in a hotel or B&B might limit children's freedom. After a day of exploring the city, they need space to play, run, and have fun, something hotels can’t always provide.
Modern campgrounds are not just for campers and tents anymore. There are many luxurious campsites, including 5-star facilities offering suites, standard rooms, and even chalets. These accommodations are equipped with all the necessary amenities, making them ideal for families.
Camping also encourages children to interact with their surroundings and helps them develop essential life skills, often in a peaceful environment with no TV, just the beauty of nature.
One of the most significant advantages of camping is the ample space for children to play. With areas designated for outdoor fun, such as swings, slides, climbing structures, and playhouses, kids can enjoy themselves in a safe and stimulating environment.
The value for money is also hard to beat. The chalet costs 33 euros per night, with an additional 35 euros for cleaning. For the price, the location is excellent, and there are various services on-site, including a market and bar for last-minute needs, though prices are slightly higher than at local stores.
Each chalet comes with a fully-equipped kitchen, offering the chance to save on meals by cooking from breakfast to dinner. Basic cleaning equipment, such as a broom, dustpan, and mop, are also provided, making long stays more manageable. A heat pump ensures the chalet stays at a comfortable temperature, so no one has to suffer from the cold.
Children will enjoy the dedicated play areas, and the multicultural environment of the campsite encourages interaction with kids from different countries. Entertainment and activities are included, and there are pools available for families to enjoy. The natural surroundings promote physical activity, helping children to unwind after a busy day.
What should you bring? Towels and bed linens are either available for an extra fee or, as in our case, provided by the guests themselves.
Traveling can be expensive, but there are plenty of ways to explore the world while saving for future adventures. Camping provides a wonderful option for families seeking both affordable and enjoyable getaways. With the right planning and the choice of the right campground, a trip can be both budget-friendly and full of unforgettable memories.
